The Audiologist can also specialize in the assessment of balance disorders.Audiologists obtain their training at a University and then do additional training at a healthcare facility before qualifying.
Who Needs a Hearing Assessment?
Simple, all age groups as hearing is an imperative part of our daily lives.
We use our hearing in everyday activities in order to get by and we even use our hearing while sleeping to alert us should there be an emergency. Many of us only have our hearing assessed once loved ones or peers notice an issue, this is often too late
Why do we test Hearing?
To establish if an individual has any hearing loss and if the loss is temporary or permanent in nature. If its temporary eg, patient has an ear infection, we refer to a general practitioner to assist. If the nature revealed is permanent then we manage hearing loss with a hearing device suitable to the diagnosis
How often should I test my hearing?
At birth, as this can alert parents to early identification of hearing loss and also assist in monitoring of children reaching milestones. Then on a yearly basis
How long can an assessment take?
Hearing tests with a consult can last up to an hour however are booked at a 30min appointment.
Will my medical aid pay for an Audiologist?
Yes, usually comprehensive medical aid plans pay for a consultation. You can call the practice for a price of the test etc
